week of mini reviews | day 3: underwhelming YA fantasy

Back with the next installment of mini reviews! Here are three YA fantasy books that I read recently that didn’t turn out so well…

BEAUTIFUL REDEMPTION BY KAMI GARCIA AND MARGARET STOHL

While I absolutely LOVE the first book in this series, as the books went on, it felt like they were getting further and further from the original world instead of expanding what I loved about the series. I did enjoy reading about the characters in Beautiful Redemption and would’ve given this book a much higher rating if not for the haphazard plot.

Rating: 3/5 stars

STAR CURSED BY JESSICA SPOTSWOOD

I’m honestly super meh about Star Cursed. I’ve had the Cahill Witch Chronicles on my TBR for a stupid amount of time, but looking back at this book, I can’t recall anything I loved or hated about it except for the end. The twist was really intense and such a good cliffhanger, but nothing spoke to me other than that.

Rating: 3/5 stars

THIS WICKED GAME BY MICHELLE ZINK

Ok y’all want to talk disappointing books? This was the one. I was enticed by the prospect of a voodoo society and thought it was going to be super atmospheric, but this book fell short in all of those aspects. The whole secret-boyfriend plot was also pretty unnecessary and felt like a trope thrown in for no reason. This book had potential, but didn’t meet my expectations.

Rating: 2/5 stars

That’s all for today! Check back tomorrow for my next round of reviews.
